What would you change about modern society?

In today’s hyper-connected world, one troubling trend stands out and something I would like to change about modern society is the compulsive need to record every moment, no matter the circumstances. From heart-pounding accidents to lighthearted events like a circus performance, people of all ages whip out their smartphones to capture videos or reels, often without a second thought. This habit of prioritizing content creation over human connection is reshaping how we respond to the world around us—and not always for the better.

Picture this: a car accident unfolds on a busy street, or someone collapses in a public space. Instead of stepping forward to help, bystanders instinctively reach for their phones, eager to document the moment. The impulse to record overrides the instinct to act, turning us into passive observers of life’s most critical moments. This isn’t just a missed opportunity to lend a hand—it’s a step toward a more callous society.

Don’t get me wrong—sharing experiences through videos can be powerful and meaningful. But when the camera becomes a barrier to empathy, we risk losing something fundamental. A single act of kindness, like calling for help or offering support, can change the course of someone’s life. Yet, too often, people choose to stand back, prioritizing likes, views, or monetized content over human decency.

This behavior isn’t just indifferent; it’s dehumanizing. By reducing ourselves to dispassionate spectators, we’re not just failing to be heroes—we’re teetering on the edge of becoming the villains in someone else’s story. Our obsession with capturing the “perfect shot” shouldn’t come at the cost of our humanity.

So, what can we do? It starts with awareness and intention. The next time you witness a moment that demands action, pause before reaching for your phone. Ask yourself: Is recording this more important than helping? Let’s choose compassion over content, presence over posts. Together, we can rebuild a society that values real-world impact over viral moments.

  1. So true, I watched a movie called A Man Named Otto with Tom Hanks in. Where a similar scenario occurs. A older man falls onto a trian platform and instantly people get out there phones and start recording it. Luckily Otto, the main characters, come to his aide to rescue him. But that feels exactly how people in our society would act. If that kind of occurrence happens and it feels like a sad reality of society, that has come to this.

  2. Thank you for bringing this up. Though everybody was experiencing the negative effects of mobile phone 24*7, unlimited internet that is throwing the content like huge pile of garbage, less useful content, social media everywhere, that left no privacy of people’s lives…nobody bothered to comment, and no one has time to listen to.
