I’ve reached a point in life where the only jobs I’d do for free are the ones that benefit me or those I hold dear. The days of trying to save the world are behind menow, it’s about saving myself, or at least what’s left of me. Here’s a short list of tasks I’d happily take on without a paycheck, each one a small act of joy or necessity in my little corner of existence.
Reading Stories to My Grandchildren
I don’t have grandchildren yet, but I’m hopeful they’ll arrive in the not-too-distant future. I’ve already got a sizable collection of storybooks waiting, gathering dust and anticipation. There’s something magical about the idea of sitting with them, turning pages, and watching their eyes light up at tales of adventure and wonder. It’s a job I’d do with all my heartno salary required.
Pottering Around in My Garden
I’m already out there every other day, watering the plants, pulling weeds, and taming the grass. It’s not just maintenanceit’s a quiet ritual. The smell of damp earth, the feel of the sun, the satisfaction of coaxing life from the soilit’s work that pays me back in peace and a few stubborn tomatoes. I’d do it forever if time allowed.
Cleaning My House
It’s backbreaking, sure, but living in a clean space is its own reward. Someone has to sweep the floors, scrub the counters, and wrestle with the endless tide of dustand that someone is me. I don’t love the labor, but I love the result: a home that feels like mine, even if it fights me every step of the way.
Reading Books
Oh, how I adore sinking into a good book. The problem? Timeor the lack of it. Lately, work has me so tied up that my reading pile just grows taller, mocking me from the shelf. But if I could, I’d spend hours lost in stories and ideas, no compensation needed beyond the escape they offer.
The world can save itself for now. These small, personal labors are where I find meaningtasks that nurture my soul, my space, or the people I hope to one day share it with.
