The last thing that I got excited about was building a house from scratch. Of course I did not build it with my own hands, but I was responsible or involved with each and every step in the process.
This was about three years back. At the peak of the COVID lock downs. I traveled to Kerala, to my hometown, and that is where I built my dream house. The entire process is elaborate. Let me share some of the steps
- Designing phase – multiple iterations of checking out various plans for rooms, windows, doors, finalizing how the front would look
- The start when you mark out the walls and boundaries on the construction ground. It has to be as per the plan. This required a re look at the size of the rooms. Result a delay of about a month
- Digging of the foundation. You can use manual labor or excavating machines. Surprisingly the machines are cheaper and do the work much faster.
- Decisions on the type of bricks, tiles and marble . Cost and budget factors come into play at this point
- Building the walls, attaching the doors and windows, plastering the ceiling in place…
As you may have noted it is a lot of work but exciting.
