How do you practice self-care?

As someone on the “wiser” side of 50, I’ve come to realize that self-care isn’t just a buzzwordit’s a lifeline. It’s about nurturing yourself physically, mentally, and financially to live a fulfilling, balanced life. In this post, I’ll dive into the physical aspect of self-care, with plans to explore the mental and spiritual side in a future piece. Let’s get started with how I keep my body strong and energized.

A Simple, Sustainable Fitness Routine

Staying active is non-negotiable at this stage of life. I follow a five-day-a-week exercise schedule that keeps me fit without overwhelming my schedule or joints. My go-to workouts include resistance band exercises and bodyweight movementsthink squats, push-ups, and stretches that build strength and flexibility. These low-impact routines are kind to my body while still delivering results.

On weekends, I swap the gym for a two-kilometer walk to our local market. It’s a gentle, refreshing way to stay active, and I make it functional by carrying groceries home. That extra weight gives my arms and core a subtle workoutself-care with a side of practicality!

Mindful Eating for a Healthier Me

When it comes to food, I’ve learned that moderation is my friend. As an Indian, I grew up with vibrant, flavorful dishes, but I’ve scaled back on deep-fried and spicy foods to keep my health in check. I focus on balanced mealsthink fresh veggies, lean proteins, and whole grainswhile keeping portion sizes reasonable. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about fueling my body with intention.

Hygiene and a Tidy Home

Self-care extends beyond exercise and dietit’s in the little rituals, too. Like most Indians, I have a daily bath ingrained in my routine; it’s practically part of my DNA! My wife and I also keep our home neat and clean, creating a calm, clutter-free space that supports our well-being. A tidy environment does wonders for both body and mind.

Self-Care: Beyond Skin Deep

For me, self-care isn’t just about glowing skin or a fit physiqueit’s about nurturing the whole self. Physical health sets the foundation, but it’s the harmony of body, mind, and finances that truly elevates life after 50. Stay tuned for my next post, where I’ll share how I care for my mental and spiritual well-being.
