Think back on your most memorable road trip.

Decades ago, I embarked on a road trip that still holds the top spot in my treasure trove of memories. I must have been just fifteen at the time. Interestingly, I wasn’t the original travelerit was supposed to be my uncle. However, a last-minute commitment meant he couldn’t make it, and I stepped in as his replacement.

The journey was a week-long tour of religious and tourist destinations across South India. We began from my hometown near Trivandrum and set out for our first stop: Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India. Known for its stunning confluence of three seas, Kanyakumari is also home to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, dedicated to the great Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda. Standing there, surrounded by the vast expanse of water, was truly awe-inspiring.

Next, we traveled to Rameshwaram, an island separated from mainland India and just 40 kilometers from Sri Lanka. This place holds immense religious significance for Hindus. The highlight of our visit was the grand Rameshwaram Temple, a masterpiece of ancient South Indian temple architecture. Walking through its vast corridors, flanked by towering stone pillars, felt like stepping back in time.

Our third stop was the serene hill station of Kodaikanal. Known for its lush greenery and cool climate, it offered a stark contrast to the heat and humidity of the plains. The crisp mountain air and breathtaking views made it a paradise for nature lovers.

From there, we journeyed to the historic temple town of Madurai. The temples here are architectural marvels, adorned with intricate stone sculptures that rival the best in the world. One of the most fascinating features was the musical stone pillars that produce melodious tones when strucka true testament to the ingenuity of ancient artisans.

Finally, we began our journey back home, a day-long drive filled with reflections on the incredible experiences of the past week. I guess I missed out mentioning the one day we spent on a house boat.

Looking back, this road trip across South India remains the most memorable journey of my life. I hope to recreate it someday, this time with my wife by my side.
